Black History Month Art on Display

Posted by Joel on Feb 12 2007 | Tagged as: News, Lifestyle

The Highland Park Public Library, located at 31 N. Fifth Avenue, will be displaying paintings by Lydia R. Watson, an artist who’s work is known as far away as Beijing, China, throughout February.

Previously, Watson’s abstract expressionism work has been displayed at the Children’s Specialized Hospital, Barron Art Center, the Donald B. Palmer Museum, AT&T & Lucent Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive and the Watchung Arts Center.

Watson’s art is often a multimedia affair, consisting of abstract paintings with paper, fabric, and recycled materials. Her work was chosen because it highlights historical and geographical events effecting black history internationally.

For more information, call the Highland Park Library at (732) 572-2750 or visit www.hpplnj.org.

Concerned parents assembled at Highland Park High School

Posted by Meagan on Dec 08 2006 | Tagged as: News

On Nov. 28, concerned parents from Highland Park, Highwood, Bannockburn, Deerfield and Riverwoods fled to Highland Park High School’s auditorium to attend a meeting aimed at parental responsibility.  Drugs and alcohol were the main concern after a fatal car crash over homecoming weekend in Deerfield and the murder of Bernie Soya, who was allegedly killed in a drug-deal gone awry.

Many students came to the meeting, saying that the adult influence leaves a permanent imprint on children.

The meeting was a way to inform both parents and teenagers about the consequences of drugs and alcohol.  Several professionals were in attendance, including psychologist John Jochem, Lake County Circuit Court Judge Ray McKoski, and Deerfield Mayor Steve Harris.

Highland Park High School alumnae start girls sports-camp

Posted by Meagan on Nov 16 2006 | Tagged as: News

Athletic-inclined girls in Lake and northern Cook Counties are about to reep the benefits of a certain former Highland Park High School star team.  HPHS alumnae Barb Lazarus and Julie Kollada, who were sports-stars thirty years ago, have re-teamed to start an all-girls sports camp.

Game On! Sports Camp 4 Girls will debut in summer of 2007 at Lake Forest College.  The camp is the first Chicagoland private summer day camp simply devoted to females.  Girls in grades K-8 are welcome.

The camp has been underway for the past two years and was set into motion after the founders spoke with Marv Tuchman, founder of camp Hi-Five, a mostly boys camp.  After sending their son’s to the camp, they realized there was not an equivalent for girls in the area, so they decided to change that.

Many parents and young girls are extremely enthusiastic and pleased that an opportunity such as this is now available for girls.  Hopefully the camp will be a huge success and will encourage young girls to continue with athletics in the future.
