Take a fly fishing trip

Posted by kelly on May 29 2006 | Tagged as: Lifestyle

If you have never taken a fly fishing trip before and you are planning on heading out on one, take along a buddy. At best you’ll have someone to help if trouble strikes. Always go prepared for all weathers and conditions. You’ll be miserable if you spend several hours in freezing weather dressed only in shorts and t-shirt - and this is one of the most common mistakes in fishing: not dressing appropriately. Approach the water very carefully and think for a while before you wade in.

Try out your gear before you leave on your trip. Broken tackle in remote areas is not easy to replace, so carry some extras for emergency repairs. Avid anglers will often take a small fly tying kit with them so they can whip up a fly to match whatever is hatching on the water. Don’t forget to take a current fishing license with you. Murphy’s law states that the only time you leave it behind is the time the ranger will want to see it. Before you leave, have a look at the fishing reports for the area you are intending to fish. You’ll get good information about what’s going on, including river levels, hatches and other details. When you arrive at your destination, wander into a tackle store and speak with the people there. They’ll usually know where the best fishing is to be had.

Some guided fishing trips will include tackle, and some will not. The price will vary accordingly. If you are an experienced angler and expert at reading any water then you’ll be able to get away without paying for a guide. Sometimes peace and solitude are well worth a couple of hours of getting used to the stream. For some, the hike into the backcountry enhances the trip. Take time to soak in the fresh air and admire the scenery.

The fishing is the climax, but the journey is well worth the time. Fly fishing is more than just a sport, it is like painting with many brushes. An extended fly fishing trip will enable you to practice your artistry.

Information on the game of chess

Posted by kelly on May 24 2006 | Tagged as: Lifestyle

Chess is a game for two people who try to adopt various strategies to defeat the other player. It is a very complex game that has virtually infinite possible moves and tactics: almost every move depends on the move made before it. The earliest chess games were traced to the 2nd century BC although there is no evidence to its exact existence. There is evidence of a type of chess game being played in India in the 6th century AD, and some modern versions were found in Persia.

There are 32 pieces in chess: 16 for each player, comprised of eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen and one king. Each player has one set of these sixteen pieces, which are all of the same color either black or white.

The first moves are some of the most important in the game. Each chess piece moves differently: the rooks can move any number of spaces vertically or horizontally; bishops can move any number of spaces in any direction diagonally; the queen can move any number of spaces diagonally, horizontally, or vertically; the king can move only one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally; Knight can move in L shape, i.e. two spaces horizontally and one space vertically they can jump over occupied squares and moves. When one piece comes in the way of another, it is removed from the board. Each player has to protect his/her pieces and also aim to eliminate the king of the opponent. When the king is eliminated, the game is over. However, the game can also end in a draw, with neither player defeating the other, although this is somewhat rare.

If you’re interested, there are hundreds of free chess games that can be played online or downloaded for free.

The global phenomenon of online dating

Posted by kelly on May 24 2006 | Tagged as: Lifestyle

Two out of every five single people aged 24 - 50 currently use, or have used an online dating service - 40%! How many of your single friends have actually told you that they’ve signed-up to a site in order to kick start their love lives? Not many I would wager. That’s because in spite of the popularity of the medium, there is a still a social stigma attached to dating web sites; when people meet a partner this way, they basically pretend to their friends that they’ve met in a bar or at some kind of party or work related function. One of the fastest growing activities in the world is still something most people wont admit to doing.

Global web sites which can boast hundreds of thousands of members from all four corners of the globe are a waste of time. What you should be concerned with when you’re choosing a site is how many members they have in your city, your town or your village. So if you’re serious about finding a partner, stick to city or country specific web sites and take the ‘global’ hype with more than a pinch of salt.

Only about 5% of people who join dating web sites actually end up in a relationship with someone at their chosen site. Let’s equate this to the ‘real’ world; you walk into a room full of one hundred strangers and how many of them would you be attracted to? Probably no more than ten. It’s the same in cyberspace - how many total strangers will there be on any site that really press all the right buttons for you? Don’t expect any miracles from a dating site.

Only 10% of people who join dating web sites get any messages at all from other members. There’s a reason for this - people who refuse to upload photos of themselves or post profiles which look like they can’t really be bothered to say anything about themselves will just be ignored. The 10% who get noticed create upbeat, confident, humorous profiles, don’t have any qualms about posting a picture of themselves and are proactive about contacting other members.

The percentage of men on dating web sites is dispropartate to that of women. Most services comprise about 60% men and 40% women so as far as the on line arena is concerned, it’s the girls who are calling the shots. They have more choice and can therefore be more discerning about who they contact or write back to. So guys, if you want to stand out from the crowd, check out paragraph 3 above; write a nice profile and post a flattering pic and you’ll be just fine.
